While there have been a few companies that have been quietly producing fat bikes under the mainstream radar for many years now. it's safe to say That surly bikes was the first company to really bring these big tired behemoths into the limelight.

Us cyclists living here on the front range are an interesting bunch. We have the pleasure of seeing some of the craziest cycling designs and inventions bestowed upon the world of cycling. From custom built recumbent cycles, to cargo bikes you could transport your old t.v. to the dump with, these are just some of the things we see on an everyday basis. Because of this bias, I think its very safe to say we were all a little skeptical when we all saw our first fat bike...
When it comes to staying active year round, a lot of you will choose to hang up the bike for the winter, and pursue much more boring pursuits... Like going to the gym, or taking up shuffleboard. But it doesn't have to be that way!
In honor of the snowy holidays, we've highlighted some of the best winter essentials to keep you warm and out riding all year long. To my knowledge, theres never been a very strong interest in cyclocross where i'm from in southern Colorado. Whether its because nobody knows what it is, or there just isn't enough people doing it, it just seems like there was a general disinterest in it. Having been in Boulder now for about 6 months its been a complete 180 from what I'm used to seeing. in what seems like the course of a week, everyone in town has shelved their road and mountain bikes in favor of the much more versatile cyclocross bike.
To be honest, I've been slacking a lot this year in the riding category. To date I have just over 200 miles on my new Niner since its custom inception this fall, which is reasonable for only getting out to the trailhead a couple of times a week... But not at all up to the standards i'm used to setting for myself. To cap off a somewhat sub par season I decided I needed to test my mettle with one last ride in the Betasso preserve before temperatures plummeted later in the day.
