In my many years of being in the cycling industry, I've learned a couple of things about cycling apparel. Number one, the phrase "you get what you pay for" is very sound advice. Second, there's a lot of you out there are wearing sub par cycling shorts. Face it, the bargain bin Pearl Izumi shorts you found at Performance Bike are not living up to the hype... And your nether regions are feeling the aftermath of your cheapskate decision. In light of this, I've decide to put together a guide to mate you with the best pair of cycling shorts You've never owned, yet... First off, you need to throw away all of those inner shorts that came with a pair of mountain biking shorts you bought. There about as low quality as they come, and the chamois pad is going to fold between you legs like a piece of cardboard, which isn't going to be very nice on your taint 20 miles into a ride. Now that you've managed to part ways with those raggedy old liners, You need to give some serious thought as to you want something that's a normal short, or something with a bib configuration. While a basic short with chamois is a great choice for a multitude of different conditions, I personally prefer a bib short configuration. The bib helps keep things in place on longer days in the saddle, and companies tend to invest a lot more time and energy into a set of flagship bibs. Got that figured out? Good... Now here are some of my choices for the most comfortable cycling shorts that'll make you wonder how you ever got by before.
Yes these shorts are expensive. I know you can buy 5 pair of seemingly comparable shorts for the price of one these. But the truth is these will arguably outlast all 5 of those pairs combined. Then combine that with the fact that you might actually be enjoying that long weekend ride instead of fidgeting around looking for the perfect spot on a $5 chamois. Sounds like money well spent to me...
